Suffering from pain?
Whether complaints arise suddenly or build up gradually through overload, it's normal to have questions. Seeking help isn't weakness, it's a step towards recovery and regaining control over your body.
Has this happened to you and are you looking for help from an expert physiotherapist?
Brief explanation of pain
Pain is a limiting factor to be able to function or perform at 100%. We take your pain complaints very seriously and want to know what the exact reason for the pain complaint is. Through a good explanation about your pain, understanding arises. You can now do something with it and recovery comes into sight.

Load and load capacity
Our body continuously adapts to what we ask of it. LoadEverything your body has to process daily: work, sport, stress, and other physical and mental effort. is everything your body has to do: in work, sport, and daily life. Load capacityYour body’s capacity to absorb load — determined by strength, fitness, recovery, and overall health. is what your body can handle at that moment.
Complaints often arise when the load exceeds the load capacity. This can happen suddenly, but also gradually through overuse or a change in activity.
Recovery is about restoring that balance. Sometimes that means temporarily reducing load, but usually we work specifically on increasing your load capacity.
At IJFysio, we look at what you ask of your body and build step by step towards a body that can handle what matters to you.
Together we create a community of movement optimists.

Start pain education?
Pain is a sensory experienceA perception that originates in your nervous system. It is how your body registers and interprets stimuli from inside and outside.. This means it is a feeling that your body perceives. It is a message from your body to draw your attention to something.
Cold and warmth are also feelings. They tell your body that something deviates from normal temperature. What you experience is a sensationA bodily signal that something deviates from normal. Think of temperature differences, pressure, or tension in muscles and joints.: a signal that something needs attention.
Pain is seen as a warning mechanismYour body's protection system. It signals potential threat so you can adjust your behavior and prevent further damage.. Your body notices that something may be going on. It is a moment when you think: I won't do this right now.
Pain doesn't automatically mean there is damage.
It means your nervous system senses that protection is needed.
Your brain plays a key role in this. It weighs several factors, such as:
- Movement
- Load
- Fatigue
- Stress
- Previous experiences
Based on these, it determines how strong the signal should be.
With acute painPain that has recently developed, usually as a direct response to tissue damage or irritation. Typically lasts less than three months., the warning mechanism is often clear: there is irritation or tissue damage.
With chronic painPain that persists for more than three months. The nervous system has become more sensitive and the alarm system triggers more easily, even without direct damage., the system may have become more sensitive. The alarm then goes off more quickly, even when there is no longer any direct damage.
You can compare it to a smoke detector that has been set too sensitively.
Recovery isn't just about "removing pain".
It's about:
- Understanding the signal
- Restoring trust in movement
- Building load capacity
- Regulating the nervous system
By gaining insight into pain, the signal often already has less influence.
